This cliché mantra has been drilled into our minds, and it's something we take with us wherever we go.  Networking in business is vital and your personal relationships truly build the foundation to new opportunities and your success.

Your professional networks are the gateway keys to your next career break or business partnership. To help you jumpstart on your path to being a networking master, we’ve compiled a list of 7 networking tips for any business entrepreneurs or business professional.

 1. Network with a plan

As an entrepreneur, every step you take should be taken with a plan. If you effectively plan your actions, you’ll be prepared for any hiccups along the way. Your networking endeavors are no exception to this rule.

Determine what type of connections you want to make, seek places where you can find these connections, and then determine to engage these professionals.

2. Be active online
If you're not tech savvy, you may avoid online interactions like the plague. However, the internet has literally taken over the world; if you're not active online, then you're missing out on a wealth of business opportunities. You will need to establish an online presence for both you and your burgeoning business. The internet will deliver you potential business connections that you may have never thought possible. Furthermore, some business professionals may only prefer to connect over the web.

3. Build real connections
An endless list of contacts of people you don't know is worthless, other than annoy them with unsolicited phone calls and emails. Instead of just collecting contact information, take the time to build REAL connections with these individuals. For example, if you attend a networking event, don't run around swapping as many business cards as you can, instead, settle down and have full conversations and build authentic relationships. These authentic relationships will have a longer shelf life and more value to your network when seeking help in the future.

4. Don't let your networks and connections go stale
People will forget about you if you let them. Maintaining a healthy network can take a big chunk of your time, but ensure that your connections never go stale by staying in touch with them every once in a while. An occasional email, phone call or social media interaction is enough to engage people. Stay on top of your connections by scheduling some time each month to connect with your existing network.

5. Help others achieve success
If you're constantly seeking help from your network, but not returning the favor, it shouldn't surprise you when these individuals start to drift. People are more inclined to help those who have helped them in the past, so use this to your advantage. This doesn't necessarily mean you should be constantly helping, however, kind acts are often never forgotten.

6. Join entrepreneurial organizations
Being a member of professional organization immediately grants you access to a treasure trove of like-minded people. While it’s one thing to join as many professional groups as you can, try to provide something valuable to each organizing you join. Sometimes, that could mean hosting an educational session or posting feedback to the organization's community forum.

7. Don't be afraid to ask for referrals
Many of us feel uncomfortable when seeking help from another person. However, when networking in business there's often a mutual understanding that asking for favors is acceptable. That being said, it is still important that you nurture these connections and create authentic relationships. Those individuals who you built a strong friendship with won't mind helping a friend in need.

Make connections that matter
While networking is the basic ABC’s for any business professional, it’s important to remember to reengage with your network to keep these relationships genuine. Now, with the help of the internet and social media, fostering your network is easier than ever.
