What is a mompreneur? If you take a quick look at the spelling, it should become clear that this is a combination of the words "mom" and "entrepreneur." In other terms, this person is a mother who is going into business for herself. Of course, just hearing those words should make people realize there's a whole suite of considerations and challenges in this professional decision. You don't want to make compromises on your job or your parenting, so how do you keep these two aspects in healthy balance? The following are some tips and strategies to help a mom out!
1. Share Your Solutions
As a mom, there are always things you are worried about, or things that are a challenge to maintain, like your child's safety and security, or proper dieting, or even your finances. If there is something about your situation that your business can solve, such as special financing classes for moms, where they can learn from your financial decisions, then spread the love! The solutions you find in solving your mompreneur challenges can often be solutions that others want to know, too!
2. Let Perfectionism Go
Easing up on your perfectionist ways is an excellent piece of advice in any business or family situation, but it's especially important when mixing both. How to be a successful mompreneur can often hinge on how you react when things don't go exactly according to plan. Sometimes things can be course corrected and salvaged. And sometimes they can't, such as a medical emergency. In both business and family, you need to able to let go and not cling to a fixed, perfect plan. Stop being intolerant of any deviation from what has been scheduled ahead of time. Take deep breaths and consider your options to move forward. If you can't do this, you not only experience more stress, and you might even miss unexpected, positive opportunities because they weren't part of the plan.
3. Don’t Do It Alone
Raising a family is not about being alone, and neither should your business venture. Accept the help of others, but, more importantly, take the time to get to know others as well. Seeking out peer-to-peer platforms with other mompreneurs can be both personally and professionally beneficial. You may find a fulfilling role as a mentor or personal growth as a mentee. Learn and evolve with others!
4. Multi-Task
It's a basic tip, but one that is still super important! A mompreneur can get more done if she can do different things at once. If you're exercising, see if you can't squeeze in reading some business emails while doing it. If you're in the waiting room while the kids are seeing the dentist, take some time to reply to some of those emails or make some business related calls while you're there! Do forget to take care of yourself and have "me time," but you should take advantage of dull moments.
5. Don't Ignore Your Health
Maintaining the health of your family, including yourself, is one of the most important things. And if you find that your health is suffering, you need to address it immediately. Always look after yourself, and never sacrifice your well-being, or that of a family member, for the sake of the business. Not only will poor health affect you, but also your family and, ultimately, your work. So take time to rest and renew, and see the benefits it has on your health and business.
